Working Title: Quality of Formal and Informal Multimorbid Elderly Care Estimates show that more than 50 million European citizens suffer from multimorbidity, which is a key reason why multimorbidity has moved higher on the priority agenda for EU health policymakers. As the global population continues to grow and age, multimorbidity is increasingly prevalent in elderly individuals. The management of multimorbid elderly patients presents many challenges for Europe, failing currently to address effectively the complex needs of multimorbid patients and their caregivers. Proposals for the topic “Healthcare Interventions for the Management of the Elderly Multimorbid Patient” - SC1-BHC-24-2020, among other goals, aim at improving the quality of life of the elderly patient by targeting individuals, formal and informal caregivers. Even though both formal and informal carers are vital to the care of elderly multimorbid people in the community and the economy of the EU countries, decision-makers have not managed to address their needs due to the narrow-focused definition and understanding of full spectrum of multimorbidity itself and the importance of integration of formal and informal care to develop more sustainable models of care. Currently, there are limited means to address effectively the multidimensional needs of multimorbid patients and their caregivers; there is a lack of best practices capturing the complexity of formal and informal multimorbid elderly care, ending up to inappropriate, low-quality, interventions and lack of integration. We hope to propose ways that will enhance the quality of life of the multimorbid elderly care receivers through support and delivery of best care adapted to such patients. Theoretically, we aim to contribute to a better understanding of the needs and challenges of both care-receivers and employed caregivers both formal and informal. Empirically, we will explore the links and associations between all stakeholders under investigation with the ultimate goal to identify sustainable propositions from the formal and informal caring perspective.
