How can local governments address food information to promote healthier and more sustainable diets?
The Infoodmation project is organising the workshop 'How can local governments address food information to promote healthier and more sustainable diets?', taking place online on 16 November at 11:00.
The workshop will bring together local and regional policy actors, researchers and NGOs to exchange experiences on initiatives that use food information and communication to promote healthier and more sustainable diets. Some local initiatives from different European regions will be presented (e.g. marketing ban of unhealthy food from Transport of London, marketing ban of meat from Amsterdam/Haarlem, social media campaigns on healthy and sustainable eating from Oxfordshire, dietary guidelines from Catalonia).
Food communication practices are mainly regulated by national and EU legislations, setting borders to marketing and advertisement for ensuring an adequate protection to consumers. However, local and regional authorities have also experimented with initiatives and regulations to promote healthier and sustainable diets, such as banning advertising of particular food products in public spaces or conducting healthy and/or sustainable eating campaigns. This context represents an opportunity for pioneering initiatives and the circulation of best practices among local actors, as well as a test bed of emerging legal conflicts between the different legislation levels.
In this workshop, the Infoodmation project aims to deepen the discussion on the role of local and regional authorities in promoting healthier and more sustainable diets through policy interventions, starting from exemplary initiatives based on food information (the restriction or promotion of it), the effects they produced, the lessons learnt and conditions to replicate or scale them up. Participation is reserved to invited local policy actors, researchers and NGOs: insights collected will be used by Infoodmation to define new best practices and to develop policy recommendations on the role of local authorities in food communication. Participants will receive an overview of the Infoodmation results and questions to be discussed in the workshop at least one week before the event.
